Hat Care Image

Hat Care

Fabric Hat

To care for your Fabric Hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush
  • Hand sponge with warm water. Depending on the fabric, you may use a diluted soap but test it on an unseen part first i.e. under the brim at the back
  • Do not use detergent, bleach or any other cleaning agent
  • Do not wring, squeeze or spin dry
  • Use warm iron only
  • Store in a cool, dry place. Do not rest the hat on the brim, stand it on the crown

Oilskin Hat

To care for your Oilskin Hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush.
  • Sponge with cold water. Do not scrub.
  • Do not use soap, detergent, bleach or any other cleaning agent.
  • Do not wring, squeeze or spin dry.
  • Do not dry clean.
  • Do not iron.
  • Do not store for long periods of time in direct sunlight i.e. the back of your car, as the sun will dry out the wax
  • Re-wax every year or when the hat is looking very dry and worn. Recommended wax is paraffin or beeswax which should be available from shoe or saddlery shops. Coat the oilskin with the wax and slowly heat it with a hairdryer to melt/distribute the wax evenly over the whole hat.

Fur Felt Hat

To care for your Fur Felt Hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush. Always brush your hat anti-clockwise.
  • If after brushing a soiled spot remains, slightly dampen a clean cloth with cleaning fluid or thinners and rub lightly. Finish with anti-clockwise action.
  • Do not dry clean.
  • Do not put your hat away when it is moist with perspiration or wet. Turn the leather sweatband out and allow the hat to dry slowly. Do not allow your hat to dry in direct sun as the hat will shrink (there is natural shrinkage in felt).
  • When your hat is not being worn, do not rest the hat on the brim, stand it on the crown.
  • Fur Felt hats can be treated with a silicon waterproofing spray.

Straw Hat

To care for your Straw Hat, we recommend the following:

  • Remove loose soil with a soft brush.
  • Do not dry clean.
  • When your hat is not being worn, do not rest the hat on the brim, stand it on the crown.
  • Do not pick up the hat by the front pinch. Continual pinching will cause the straw to wear out and crack.
